SC says no fundamental right to WhatsApp, suggests using Arattai

Refusing to direct WhatsApp to unblock the account of a doctor, the Supreme Court recently advised her she can instead opt for other messaging platforms like the indigenous Arattai.

Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, appearing for petitioner Raman Kundra, told a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta on October 10 that WhatsApp’s “arbitrary” action violated her fundamental rights. The plea said that “on 13th September, 2025 evening, it blocked her account. After she sought a review, she was informed on 14 September, 2025 evening that the account will continue to be blocked.

Justice Mehta asked the senior counsel, “What is your fundamental right to have access to WhatsApp?” Justice Nath said “there are other communication applications” like Arattai, which she can use. “There’s this app called Arattai… use that,” Justice Nath said, adding it’s made in India too.
