Airtel Targets More Towns With 4G In Expansion Bid

Airtel Kenya plans to expand the coverage of its high-speed 4G network to three more towns over the next four months.

Managing director Prasanta Das Sarma said last week the telco would take 4G network to Kisumu, Eldoret and Nakuru. Airtel launched its 4G network in Nairobi and Mombasa two months ago.

Mr Sarma said Airtel is banking on data and voice to grow its customer base while adding that launch of the 4G network has played a key role in helping the firm to increase the number of its subscribers.

Airtel’s new Internet bundles launched on Thursday will see customers receive more data at the same rates as before and free WhatsApp services to help it gain more market share.

“All the top cities will be covered and the process has started so the next three to four months they should all be covered. We will not stop there but continue to improve services for our customers,” said Mr Sarma.

“Similarly we will continue to improve our 2G and 3G networks so network expansion is a major plan and it is an ongoing venture.

“We want to cover more customers and we want to improve our services.”

The expansion comes at a period when Airtel has witnessed the fastest growth in subscriber numbers compared to rivals Safaricom and Telkom Kenya.

According to the Communications Authority of Kenya Airtel data users rose 11.9 per cent from 8.7 million to 9.7 million in June last year. – Business Daily
