XL Axiata Trials 1Gbps WPON In Indonesia

Indonesia’s XL Axiata has deployed the nation’s first wireless passive optical network trial service in collaboration with Nokia.

The trial during a regional sporting event delivered 1Gps aggregate broadband access speeds over Nokia’s WPON solution, which combines PON with wireless networking based on the 60 GHz WiGig (802.11ad) standard.

Using beamforming to deliver connections of up to 1Gbps for end users, XL Axiata was able to bring fiber to a street corner and wirelessly extend the network at a reduced cost.

The operator now plans to leverage the technology to provide very high speed broadband services to other residential areas within major Indonesian cities.

“Nokia’s WPON solution is a perfect answer for our requirements pulling fiber further than ever before while ensuring that every subscriber enjoys high speed Internet and TV services,” XL Axiata director technology Yessie D Yosetya said.

“The solution promises to make available affordable broadband services beyond the reach of our fiber network, improve digital literacy as well as support the small and medium-sized enterprises.”

Nokia head of Indonesia Robert Catanach added that the vendor is “excited to collaborate with XL Axiata to provide the first Wireless PON service trial in Indonesia and in the Asia Pacific and Japan region. Our WPON solution will help reduce costs and quickly deliver high speed broadband access to XL Axiata’s residential areas.” – Telecom Asia
