This Is How Google Plans To Change Dual-SIM Tech In Android Smartphones

Internet search giant Google has announced that it is now rolling out e-SIM support for latest handsets — Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. In a blogpost, the US-based technology giant revealed that the it is expanding e-SIM support to more carriers. Apart from rolling out e-SIM support for their handsets, Google also said that it will create a program that will allow other Android device makers to build e-SIM-capable smartphones, in order to enable “a consistent and simple experience across the ecosystem.” This basically means that we may see more e-SIM supporting handsets soon.

In India, e-SIM support will be rolled out for both Airtel and Reliance Jio for Pixel 3 in the coming months, revealed the company. Both the telecom operators already provide this facility for latest iPhone lineup — iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. The country’s largest telecom operator, Vodafone-Idea is still not supporting the e-SIM feature in the country.

The e-SIM facility will be available for Pixel customers in the US starting today. “If you’re in the US and would like to purchase a phone that has eSIM, head over to Google Fi or the Google Store.” Apart from India, other countries that will soon get e-SIM support for latest Pixel handsets will be Germany (Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone), UK (EE) and various other countries that support Truphone and Gigsky. “With e-SIM, we hope to bring you instant connectivity across more carrier networks, and devices in the Google ecosystem—from Android smartphones to Chromebooks to Wear OS smartwatches,” said Google.

e-SIM support in India: What you need to know
While Reliance Jio offers e-SIM support for both prepaid and postpaid users, Airtel is offering the eSIM facility only to its postpaid subscribers (as of now). There is no Airtel plan with eSIM support for prepaid subscribers yet. Users have the option to convert the regular SIM number into e-SIM. For example, if they have Airtel postpaid and a Vodafone SIM, they can convert the Airtel number into e-SIM to use it as the secondary number on the new iPhones while inserting the physical SIM of Vodafone in the device. – Gadgets Now
