T-Mobile confirms April 2024 date for 2G switch off

T-Mobile has confirmed its 2G service will be retired in April of next year.

The US operator noted on its website that the network will officially be switched off on April 2, 2024. The news comes after T-Mobile suffered a network outage on Monday night, with more than 80,000 customers affected across the country.

It comes as the operator switched off its 3G service in July of last year, after previously discontinuing the LTE network it inherited from Sprint Corp and Sprint’s 3G CDMA infrastructure.

Many operators across the world are switching off 2G and 3G services to free up spectrum for their 4G and 5G services instead.

Last week, French mobile operator Bouygues Telecom announced plans to decommission its 2G network by the end of 2026, while its 3G service will be switched off in 2029.

In the US, Verizon called time on its 3G service, while Orange Slovakia detailed plans to shut down its 3G network this year, and Greenlandic telco Tusass confirmed it will discontinue its 3G services this year.

Over in the UK, Vodafone began its phased 3G switch-off at the end of last month. Data Center Dynamics
