SK Telecom and AWS to launch ‘5GX Edge Zone’ in Seoul

SK Telecom announced on June 7 that it has built the “5GX Edge Zone” in Seoul, the second 5G edge cloud service base in Korea with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

5GX Edge Zone is the base where SKT 5G Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and AWS Wavelength are built.

It helps to minimize network delay by being located on the shortest path where 5G and cloud meet.

Customers can access the “5G Edge Cloud” located in the 5GX Edge Zone and implement ultra-low latency applications in the same development environment as AWS.

The two companies built Korea’s first 5GX Edge Zone zone in Daejeon in 2020 for cooperation in 5G edge cloud services.

SK Telecom is collaborating with various companies in service fields that require real-time, large-capacity data processing, such as ultra-realistic media, cloud games, and robots.

The 5GX Edge Zone built in Seoul improves customer cloud access efficiency by distributing the demand for customer applications that use 5G edge cloud.

In particular, it is expected to maximize the service experience of users in the metropolitan area where the population is concentrated.

SKT and AWS, which will be operating two 5GX Edge Zones in Seoul and Daejeon, will also introduce “5G Edge Discovery” technology that allows customers to use the optimal edge cloud service based on their location.

5G Edge Discovery is a technology that automatically provides the most effective connection to low-latency, real-time services by discovering the edge zone closest to the customer’s location.

By expanding the 5GX Edge Zone, SKT will also accelerate cooperation with various partners to spread 5G-specialized services such as AI, robots, and healthcare.

SKT is conducting demonstrations of outdoor delivery robots in various service scenarios in the metropolitan area and Jeju Island.

Based on the experience gained in this process, the robot control signal collection and control system will be built in the 5GX Edge Zone in Seoul to increase stability and remote control efficiency.

In addition, the company plans to implement a service that remotely monitors a patient’s health status, such as electrocardiogram, body temperature, and blood pressure, in real time through a smartphone in the edge cloud and provides it to domestic hospitals. Korea IT Times
