Samsung Growing 5G Network Equipment Biz

Samsung Electronics has managed to become a leading provider of 5G network equipment, with its global market share reaching nearly 28% in the first half of 2019, according to Daijun Zhang, president of Samsung R&D Institute China-Beijing (SRC-B).

Samsung’s share in the 5G equipment market is set to go higher onward as it expects to secure new deals from clients in Japan and the US soon, and the forthcoming commercial runs of mmWave 5G networks will also bring in new orders for Samsung, Zhang said.

Samsung currently accounts for 60% of 5G telecom equipment market in Korea thanks to support from fellow top-three telecom operators – SK Telecom, KT and LG U+.

In the US, Samsung has landed 5G equipment orders from Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, Zhang noted, adding that its mmWave-based 5G equipment has also been adopted for commercial applications in Chicago.

Samsung has also established partnerships for 5G equipment with Japan’s KDDI, with prospects for being able to secure up to 46% of 5G network equipment orders from the Japanese telecom operator, Zhang revealed.

In addition to central office equipment for 5G networks, Samsung has also rolled out an array of 5G solutions for CPE (customer premises equipment) devices, including its baseband chips that support both sub-6 GHz and mmWave technologies, its recently released Exynos 990 mobile processor, and other RF and power management (PWM) chips.

Samsung is also deepening its developments in smart home appliances, smart city, industrial IoT and medical care solutions, with an aim of ramping up its application services and building a 5G ecosystem that will help drive the sale of its 5G equipment, Zhang stated.―Digitimes
