Realme Set To Launch Affordable 5G Smartphone

Realme, the Chinese brand that was born as Oppo’s sub-brand, has announced that it is working on a 5G smartphone. This smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Series 5G mobile platform, which has 5G integrated into a SoC.

“By adopting Snapdragon 7 Series that is one of the first mobile platforms with integrated 5G, Realme clearly demonstrates its Dare-to-Leap capabilities,” the company said in a statement. Using the Snapdragon 7-Series processor would mean that the 5G smartphone from Realme could cost less than the high-end flagship smartphones that will come with 5G connectivity.

This is not the first time Realme has announced its plan to make a 5G smartphone. Back in June, Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth said that Realme will be one of the first brands to bring 5G products globally this year. “#5GisReal …. Straight out of meeting room with Mr. Sky Li. Glad to share with you our latest R&D updates: #realme will be among the first brands to bring 5G products globally this year. And we are determined to bring the best of technology to India as early as possible,” said the tweet. Realme also said that it will launch 5G smartphones in India as soon as the 5G networks are ready to roll out. But the company has not confirmed whether we will see 5G phones this year or next year from Realme in India.

Realme’s announcement comes just after Qualcomm said that it is working on launching 5G-supported chips across the Snapdragon 8, 7, and 6 series in 2020. “The integrated Snapdragon 7 Series 5G Mobile Platform began sampling to customers in the second quarter of 2019. With exceptional progress, Qualcomm Technologies has accelerated the commercial readiness of this platform to fourth quarter of 2019 with devices expected to launch soon thereafter,” said Qualcomm at IFA 2019 trade show held in Berlin.

Besides Realme, Qualcomm has also said that 11 smartphone brands — including Oppo, Redmi, Vivo, Motorola, HMD Global, the home of Nokia smartphones, and LG Electronics — will use this new integrated Snapdragon 7 Series 5G mobile platform in their future 5G mobile devices.―Times of India
