Leaders, major players for Asia/Pacific Vision AI software platform in 2021

According to IDC MarketScape : Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Vision AI Software Platform 2021 Vendor Assessment, AWS, Google, and Microsoft are identified (in alphabetical order) as “Leaders” of the Vision AI software platform vendors in the region. These vendors demonstrated leadership in their abilities to provide Vision AI platform solutions, including product functionality and service delivery, and have clear product and market development strategies to address Asia/Pacific’s diverse regional requirements in local languages, ethnic groups, and business transformations. These “Leaders” are closely followed by “Major Players” in the market namely (in alphabetical order) Alibaba, NEC, Samsung SDS, SAS, and Tencent.

“Vision AI is one of the emerging technology markets. It’s critical to watch the major vendors and more mature market solutions, as the early movers tend to consolidate their strengths with greater access to training data, more iterations of algorithm variations, deeper understanding of the operation contexts inclusive of constraints and noises, and more systematic approaches to work with solution partners in the ecosystem,” says Dr. Chris Marshall, Associate Vice President for Analytics, Big Data and AI at IDC Asia/Pacific.

Vision AI is undergoing a revolution due to several factors, including the rise of deep learning algorithms, investments in systematically labeled image libraries, the proliferation of charge coupled vision capture devices, and the availability of massive storage and high-performance compute capabilities. These have made Vision AI practical in three basic but distinct categories of use cases – Vision AI for Productivity, for End-user Experience, and Decision Recommendation. When assessing Vision AI software platform vendors, IDC recommends that organizations should have a clear understanding of the three use case categories, and shortlist vendors based on their associated capabilities for these use cases. Each vendor has strengths and weaknesses that make it more or less appropriate for a particular client challenge.

This report evaluated major Vision AI software platform providers that offer Vision AI software platform products based on IDC’s MarketScape framework. These vendors must offer Vision AI software platform based on the company’s own IP, under independent product SKUs, or as part of a general AI software platform. The platform product must have generated software license revenue or consumption-based software revenue for at least 12 months in Asia/Pacific. The platform product must provide pretrained and/or customized models based on computer vision technologies, including deep learning-based text extraction. The evaluation framework consists of 32 scoring elements to cover functionality offerings, service delivery, portfolio benefits, customer satisfaction, product strategy, growth strategy, delivery strategy, and research and innovation strategy.

IDC has been tracking the development of leading regional and global Vision AI software platform providers in the market through its core research on software, AI market forecasts, IT Spending, as well as business surveys on the maturity and sentiment regarding AI technology adoption.
