Jio adds 4.82 lakh users in July as Vi’s decline persists

Reliance Jio strengthened its dominance in the Indian telecom market in July 2025, adding 4.82 lakh mobile subscribers — the highest for the month — and retaining leadership across wireless, wireline, and broadband segments, TRAI data showed. With a 41.04 percent share in mobile services, Jio remains the sector’s key growth driver and a bellwether for investors.

Bharti Airtel followed with a net addition of 4.64 lakh mobile subscribers, maintaining its wired subscriber base of 1.02 lakh and 21.73 percent market share. Meanwhile, Jio outpaced Airtel in the wireline segment with 5.71 lakh new connections.

Vodafone Idea, however, lost 3.59 lakh subscribers, underscoring its prolonged decline amid mounting AGR dues and financial stress, raising further concerns over its future viability.

BSNL lost 1.01 lakh subscribers in July while MTNL, too, continued to lose subscribers.

In July 2025, total telephone subscribers stood at 1220.02 million, with wireless at 1171.91 million and wireline at 48.11 million. This brings the overall teledensity to 86.15 percent, with urban at 134.07 percent and rural at 59.19 percent.

The total number of broadband subscribers increased from 979.71 million at the end of June 2025 to 984.69 million at the end of July 2025 with a monthly growth rate of 0.51 percent.

RJio had a 50.62 percent market share, Bharti Airtel 31.18 percent, and Vi 12.96 percent.

Wireline subscribers increased from 47.49 million at the end of July 2025, to 48.11 million at the end of June 2025. The net increase in the wireline subscriber base was 0.63 million with a monthly growth rate of 1.32 percent. Reliance Jio held 32.22 percent, Bharti Airtel 21.73 percent, and Vodafone Idea 1.57 percent of the wireline market in July 2025. BSNL, MTNL, and APSFL, the three PSU access service providers, held 20.46 percent of the wireline market share.

Total wireless (mobile + 5G FWA) subscribers increased from 1170.88 million at the end of June, 2025 to 1171.91 million at the end of July 2025, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.09 percent. Reliance Jio held 41.04 percent, Bharti Airtel 33.65 percent, and Vodafone Idea 17.52 percent of the wireline market in July 2025. BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 7.79 percent of the wireless market.
