US takes lead in semiconductor innovation, UC Commerce Secretary

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo recently emphasized the significant strides the US has made in semiconductor manufacturing, stating that America has excelled in innovation over China.

This advancement comes as both nations vie to bolster their domestic technology manufacturing sectors.

Under President Biden’s administration, semiconductor manufacturing has become a central aspect of domestic policy, with Raimondo leading the charge.

The CHIPS Act, which funnels billions into domestic semiconductor production, has been a cornerstone of this initiative, touted as a victory for both economic and national security by Biden during his reelection campaign.

Raimondo explained in a 60 Minutes interview that today’s national security concerns extend beyond traditional military hardware to include cutting-edge technologies such as semiconductors, AI, and drones.

She highlighted the critical role of the Commerce Department in these technological advancements.

Raimondo expressed concerns about the US’s dependence on China for semiconductor production, which poses risks to vital American industries.

She articulated a strategic shift towards relocating much of this manufacturing to the US, particularly for technologies crucial to national security.

Raimondo pointed out that although trade with China is still desired for a broad range of goods and services, there needs to be a limit when it comes to sensitive technologies that could be used in nuclear weapons and surveillance systems.

She criticized China’s current capabilities in semiconductor technology, mentioning that even the best chips produced by Chinese industry leader Huawei lag significantly behind American technology.

This gap, she noted, underscores the effectiveness of export controls that the US has implemented.

She also touched on the geopolitical tension involving Taiwan, a major hub for semiconductor production, which faces ongoing threats from China.
