Telia and partners obtain EU funding for dedicated 5G networks

In an ambitious move to enhance digital innovation, Telia, a prominent Swedish telecommunications company, has secured funding from the European Union to establish dedicated 5G networks at five key locations in Sweden. The locations include Ultuna agricultural testbed, Lulea Harbour, Boden Industrial Park, Skelleftea Smart City, and hospitals in the Stockholm region.

Project Details and Funding
The projects, which boast a total funding of 3 million euros, will witness Telia collaborating with the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) and other partners, to augment transport and logistics, bolster safety at ports, manage city traffic, and promote sustainable agriculture. The tools to achieve these objectives include the use of connected and autonomous vehicles, drones, and agricultural robots.

Focus on Healthcare
An additional 6.4 million euros in EU funds will be directed towards a project in the Stockholm region. Here, Telia and its partners will delve into how 5G can boost patient safety, quality, and accessibility in healthcare. The plan includes the implementation of advanced services such as video communication between ambulances and emergency departments, drones equipped with defibrillators, and real-time tracking of medical equipment using 5G.

Part of a Larger Strategy
These initiatives are a part of Telia’s broader strategy to bring together businesses, public sector, and academia to create strong ecosystems for the deployment of digital solutions. The projects will also be connected to the 5G network operated by Telia’s innovation program NorthStar, launched in partnership with Ericsson, to further aid digital transformation in industries like automotive and transportation.
