Tata Digital formally appoints N Chandrasekaran as chairman

N Chandrasekaran, the executive chairman of Tata Sons, has now been named chairman of Tata Digital, which announced the launch of its much-anticipated mega app Tata Neu on April 7. Tata Digital has been Chandrasekaran’s brainchild since he took over as Tata Sons chairman in February, and he was reappointed for another five years in February. As the Mumbai-based business looks to create a difference in the Indian eCommerce universe, he has been actively involved in its expansion ambitions from the start.

The formal appointment of Chandrasekaran is significant in light of the company’s future aspirations to raise capital from outside investors. Pratik Pal, Tata’s CEO, and Mukesh Bansal, creator of Cultfit—who previously created fashion eCommerce firm Myntra—are currently leading the company’s digital strategy. Having Chandrashekaran at the helm provides further comfort to foreign investors about the level of attention and focus that the digital project will receive within the Tata system.

Chandrasekaran’s involvement in the project has been reiterated by those involved in the development of Tata Neu.

Following Tata Neu’s launch last week, it will be interesting to observe how regular consumers react to the salt-to-steel conglomerate’s eCommerce service. The software was being tested for several months with access restricted to Tata group personnel.

The super app seamlessly integrates product commerce, service commerce, and financial services into a consumer-first, future-ready, integrated experience as per Tata Digital, which owns Tata Neu.

Tata Neu debuted during the Indian Premier League (IPL), and Tatas are the tournament’s title sponsor. BigBasket, 1mg, Croma, AirAsia, IHCL, Qmin, Starbucks, Tata Cliq, Tata Play, and Westside are among the Tata-owned brands that will be featured on the super app at first. According to Chandrasekaran, Vistara, AirIndia, Titan, Tanishq, and Tata Motors will be added soon. The Media Bulletin
