Spain launches call for aid for experimental development of 5G apps

The Official State Gazette has published the bases that regulate the granting of aid for carrying out projects for the experimental development of 5G applications and services that affect the digital transformation of key economic sectors for the country, as well as its first call within the framework of the Recovery Plan and the program for the Universalization of Digital Infrastructures for Cohesion, UNICO Sectorial 5G for 2022.

These grants are intended to develop 5G tractor projects -through the creation of prototypes, demonstrations, development of pilots, testing and validation of products- that facilitate the application of this technology quickly and agilely to economic sectors such as the vehicle connected, health, tourism, security, agriculture, among others.

It is estimated that the development of 5G technology will promote the transformation of the industry -4th industrial revolution- and will facilitate applications such as connected mobility, digital health, smart tourism or a digital agri-food sector.

Beneficiaries who create employment in Spain
The 2022 call for aid, endowed with 90.7 million euros and under a competitive system, is aimed at companies and research and knowledge dissemination organizations whose main operational center is in Spain.

The regulatory bases for the granting of this aid establish that the beneficiaries will have to create in Spain the necessary employment for the provision of the activity object of the subsidy.

The financed projects will have a budget of between 3 and 15 million euros and may be developed individually or in cooperation. The 5G applications and services that are developed can be deployed on private networks, on a self-provision basis, on public or mixed networks.

The granting of this aid is part of the Recovery Plan and is aligned with the Digital Spain agenda and the strategy to promote the deployment of 5G launched by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure so that Spain is one of the countries leaders in the deployment of this technology.
