Satellite M2M And IoT For Chinese Industry

The potential arrival in China of Internet of things and machine-to-machine satellite services and solutions targeted at the heavy equipment, transportation and logistics and maritime industries, is further evidence of the growing importance of IoT and M2M strategies in industrial settings.

On this occasion ORBCOMM, a leading global satellite IoT provider, has announced the availability of its satellite services and solutions in China. The company’s local service partner for China, Asia Pacific Navigation Telecommunications Satellite (APNTS), based in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, will participate in providing service, support and distribution.

The initiative got the go-ahead after one of the leading Chinese telecommunications operators recently received authorisation for the use of ORBCOMM’s satellite constellation. A China gateway earth station (GES) is planned for construction to serve as a network link between the ORBCOMM satellite system and its worldwide infrastructure. This will enable the satcoms provider to more effectively deliver the advanced services provided by its satellite constellation.

Additional ORBCOMM GES facilities in China are in the planning stages. The company says it operates the only commercial satellite network entirely dedicated to M2M.

While the use of M2M and IoT varies by industry, both in types of systems and in use cases, its potential in areas such as preventive maintenance, productivity, security and tracking the movement of goods, to name only a few, is vast. It will be interesting to see how M2M and IoT can enhance the efficiency of the heavy equipment, transportation and logistics and maritime industries in a market as vast and complex as China. – Developing Telecom
