Nokia, EPB launch America’s first community-wide 25 gig internet service

In an important milestone for fiber, and highlighting the ways it can be used beyond residential broadband as well as the role utility companies can play in providing telco services – EPB Chattanooga and Nokia have announced their work together to launch the first community-wide 25 gig internet service in the U.S.

The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Convention Center is EPB’s first 25 Gig customer; making it the first convention center worldwide to offer such high speed broadband connectivity and enabling it to draw business from conferences, e-gaming competitions, live streaming events and more.

To power this, Nokia is providing its 25G PON solution – enabling multiple generations of to operate all on the same fiber line (including GPON and XGS-PON), simply by adding a new line card to the optical line terminals (OLTs).
Thanks to Nokia’s Quillion chipset, this enables EPB to offer easier upgrades to individual customers without having to upgrade entire neighborhoods and provides a new revenue source for the smart city.

Vicky Gregg, EPB Board Chair, said: “We are once again breaking the typical approach for internet service providers by proactively upgrading to the latest technologies in anticipation of future needs. Our goal is to enable new frontiers for technical innovation and job creation for our customers to the benefit of our whole community.”
