More than 10 million Nokia phones shipped during Q1 2020

In the first quarter of 2020, according to data published by Counterpoint Research, the global smartphone shipments declined by 13%, which represents a historic decline. The total shipments were 295 million, while China was the market that saw the biggest decline in shipments (27% year-over-year) due to the timing of COVID-19 pandemic.

Samsung remained the market leader, but with a significant decline in shipments, followed by Apple and Huawei. Xiaomi saw a small growth on place 4, and so did the combined BBK brands Oppo, Vivo and Realme, thanks to Realme’s increase in shipments.

The maker of Nokia phones HMD Global shipped more than 10 million phones during Q1 2020. In terms of smartphones, the company was the 13th biggest smartphone vendor with 1% market share in Q1 2020, according to Counterpoint. The decline in shipments was 44% compared to Q1 2019, which is more than triple compared to the market decline. Calculated, that gives us around 1.7 million Nokia smartphones shipped during Q1 2020.

The feature phone shipments also saw a decline. Nokia feature phones had 13% global market share, ranking HMD Global as the 2nd biggest feature phone vendor after iTEL with 27%. The decline in shipments was 34%, meaning HMD shipped around 8.6 million feature phones in Q1 2020.

Adding the two numbers up we get around 10.3 million shipped Nokia phones during Q1 2020, which represents a 39% decline compared to Q1 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic surely played some role, but looking at the fact that the market declined 13% and Nokia smartphone shipments 3 times that much, the virus wasn’t the only thing killing sales.
