Metro construction damages BSNL fibre across west Nagpur
Internet services across nearly 75% of West Nagpur were severely disrupted after a major BSNL optical fibre cable was reportedly damaged during ongoing underground Metro construction work near Zero Mile, affecting thousands of broadband users, government offices, banks, educational institutions, and businesses.
According to sources, the fibre cable was damaged during excavation for the Metro’s underground corridor at Zero Mile, leading to widespread connectivity issues in areas including Sadar, Civil Lines, Seminary Hills, Gittikhadan, Dharampeth, and several other parts of West Nagpur.
Senior BSNL officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said restoration work is underway on a war footing. Technical teams have been deployed to repair the damaged fibre and restore connectivity.
Officials added that services are expected to be restored gradually, though full normalization may take some time.
The outage has disrupted online transactions, digital payments, government services, office operations, and work-from-home activities, causing significant inconvenience to thousands of users. The incident has also raised concerns over the protection of critical telecom infrastructure during major underground construction works and the need for better coordination among executing agencies.
