Korea’s Point Mobile expands supply deal with Amazon to offline units

Point Mobile Co., South Korea’s top enterprise handheld devices maker, expanded a supply deal with Amazon.com Inc. to offline units of the world’s largest online shopping mall.

Point Mobile on Monday unveiled a deal to supply Amazon’s physical store affiliates from this month with devices such as the PM5 Bluetooth scanner, the PM85 mobile computer, the PM550 handheld terminal and the RF851 radio-frequency identification reader.

The South Korean company has been providing enterprise mobile devices such as industrial personal digital assistants (PDAs) to Amazon only for its e-commerce business.

“The expansion of the supply deal is expected to raise the total sales to Amazon group to as much as $65 million,” a Point Mobile source said. The company expected such revenue to lift its total sales this year to more than 140 billion won ($116.9 million), the source added.

Point Mobile’s stock on Monday rose up to 6.5% to 19,700 won, the highest since Jan. 18.

Amazon’s offline units include Amazon Books, a chain of retail bookstores, Amazon Fresh, a grocery delivery service provider, Amazon Go, a chain of convenience stores, and Whole Foods Market, a multinational supermarket chain.

Amazon planned to open large physical shops in the US that will operate like department stores as the e-commerce giant expands its footprint in brick-and-mortar retail, media reported last year. KED Global
