An era of connected intelligent systems

At the dawn of a new decade, we are witnessing new trails of possibilities, led by technology breakthroughs which otherwise were not possible or practical. Emergence of the much talked-about 5G networks is expected to revolutionize communication on this planet. When it becomes a reality, it marks the genesis of yet another information age, where content creation and consumption happen at a different plateau all together. As consumers, each of us would witness transformative experiences that make this world more connected than ever before. At this juncture, a few technology trends, which made headlines in the last few years, appear to align well with the telecom service providers establishing the much-needed foundation.

The new-age telecom networks promise low-latency and high-bandwidth communication, and this truly lights up the stage for IoT to realize its true potential. Yes! a fast-emerging trend in the world of IoT is edge inference, which pretty much implies that devices need to have the ability to drive intelligent inferences closer to where data is generated. A mesh of cloud-connected devices operating in unison will elevate human computer interaction as an operating environment to newer heights.

While innovation in the area of telecommunication drives IoT adoption and implementation to a greater extent, another important stream of technology that will take center stage is artificial intelligence (AI). Yes! AI is no hype and a complementary technology stream to IoT. While IoT leads to data explosion, they become the much-required fodder for AI/ML to deliver on predictive statistics. The dire need for Edge Computing, emergence of AI to drive intelligent inferences at the edge will be a true reflection of innovation in information and communication technologies. What if analysis driving transformative experience are the need of the hour, and IoT and AI will truly lead this change.

As a reflection of the last decade and anticipation of what is in store for this decade, it is truly overwhelming to witness the fast-paced innovation that is underway. It is imperative that public and private cloud will be central for key solutions to scale and drive larger societal impact. In fact, telecom networks and infrastructure will also see a massive dependence on cloud computing to drive efficiency, reliability and availability of communication channels.

In the new software-development construct, services industry will continue to heavily invest and innovate on solutions as complementary to their services in driving large-scale impact. A key emerging trend in solutions is its ability to stay agnostic of any specific infrastructure. The design thinking here is of a solution to make its way into any compute environment, depending on its applicability in solving a specific problem. With the emergence of Edge Computing, software applications need to be ambidextrous in their true sense. It is essential for a functional service to be relevant, ranging from public or private cloud to variety of edge end points in the modern computing era. This has forced technologists to bring in smart solution-packaging and deployment techniques to the fore via containers. Functional independence from infrastructure is key to agility and is truly a trend on a treadmill. Sooner, further innovations in this area will see techniques emerge to make it an integral part of software-development practices.

Technology innovation, be it software or hardware, is at its peak, and use cases that were once perceived to be impractical will find their place on the tarmac in the coming years. While a lot can be achieved in the short term, the economics of scale is where technologists are putting their brains to work to make it a reality in the near future.
