Vi, BSNL, MTNL continued to lose subscribers in April
Reliance Jio recorded strong gains in both overall and active subscribers in April 2025, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s monthly tracker. Bharti Airtel saw muted growth in overall subscribers and lost active users during the month, while Vodafone Idea continued to report a decline in both mobile broadband and active subscribers.
RJio added 2.64 million subscribers in April, and Airtel 0.17 million new users. Vi saw a loss of more than 0.64 million subscribers.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd lost 0.15 million and 0.67 million subscribers, respectively.
In April 2025, the total number of telephone subscribers was 1,203.84 million, comprising 1,166.43 million wireless subscribers and 37.41 million wireline subscribers. The overall teledensity was 85.19 percent, with urban at 131.46 percent and rural at 59.26 percent.
The total broadband subscribers decreased from 944.12 million at the end of March 2025 to 943.09 million at the end of April 2025 with a monthly growth rate of 0.11 percent. RJio had a 50.53 percent market share, Bharti Airtel 30.68 percent, and Vi 13.32 percent.
Wireline subscribers increased from 37.04 million at the end of March 2025 to 37.41 million at the end of April 2025. Net increase in the wireline subscriber base was 0.37 million with a monthly growth rate of 1.00 percent. RJio held 35.28 percent, Bharti Airtel 27.28 percent, and Vi 2.19 percent of the wireline market in April 2025. BSNL, MTNL, and Atria Convergence Technologies Limited, the three PSU access service providers, held 27.4 percent of the wireline market share.
Total wireless subscribers increased from 1,163.76 million at the end of March 2025 to 1,166.43 million at the end of April 2025, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.23 percent. RJio held 40.76 percent, Bharti Airtel 33.65 percent, and Vi 17.66 percent of the wireline market in April 2025. BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a market share of only 7.92 percent.
