How Bangalore will play an important role in building India’s Data Centre footprint

Bangalore is renowned as India’s Silicon Valley, with an estimated GDP of more than US$110 billion. One-third of India’s IT exports come from the city, and its IT and data centre infrastructure is secure, intelligent, and scalable.

Banglore’s data centres have played and will continue to play a very important role in uplifting the country’s IT ecosystem. Post COVID-19, India is going through some profound changes in incentivising data centres and is transforming the country’s entrepreneurial setup.

At present, Karnataka is home to prominent data centre players like Reliance, Sify, NTT, Nxt Gen, Airtel, STT and Web Werks to name a few.

Earlier this year the Karnataka Cabinet approved a new policy that aims to attract investments worth Rs 10,000 crore in the data centre industry by 2025.

The Cabinet decided to grant Rs 100.50 crore to implement the Karnataka Data Centre Policy 2022 which offers a slew of incentives and subsidies, said Law Minister JC Madhuswamy.

“Karnataka has the potential to position itself as one of the leading destinations for Data Center Industry in the country with a data centre capacity of 96 MW which accounts for 15 per cent of India’s data centre capacity,” added a policy note prepared by the IT/BT Department. “Bengaluru currently features among the top 5 leading destinations for the Data Centre Industry in India.”

Incentives in Karnataka
According to reports, the Karnataka Data Centre Policy offers special incentives for companies to set up data storage infrastructure outside Bengaluru – a capital subsidy of up to Rs 10 crore, 10 per cent land subsidy up to Rs 3 crore, 100 per cent stamp duty exemption up to 10 acres, concession on registration charges and 100 per cent exemption on land conversion fees.

Previous year Web Werks had signed an MoU with the Government of Karnataka and the project will be fully operational in 2 years, the company said. This data centre in the Silicon Valley of India will have a potential of up to 20 MW with further expansion possibilities, Web Werks said. It will be the fourth data centre in Bangalore.

According to a Markets and Markets report The India data center market size is expected to reach USD 1.5 billion by 2022 from USD 1.0 billion in 2018, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11.4 per cent during the forecast period.

The market is driven by the deeper internet penetration, increase in digital data traffic, public cloud services, and higher expected growth for IoT.
