Assam seeks Centre’s support to advance chip manufacturing

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday met Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in New Delhi to discuss a range of projects aimed at accelerating the state’s industrial and infrastructure development.

The meeting focused on strengthening Assam’s role in India’s semiconductor ecosystem and expanding railway connectivity across the state.

Sharing details of the meeting on social media, CM Sarma said he had sought the Union Ministry’s support in positioning Assam as a key contributor to the country’s semiconductor mission.

He expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for what he described as a constructive discussion on projects important for Assam’s growth.

In a post on X, he said, “Really grateful to Hon’ble Union Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw Ji for giving us his valuable time to discuss key projects for Assam. His clarity and hands on approach is truly remarkable. “

Sharing details of the meeting, the Chief Minister said he sought the Union Ministry’s support in positioning Assam as a key contributor to the country’s semiconductor mission.

“I have sought the IT Ministry’s guidance to help establish Assam as a central pillar in India’s semiconductor strategy and develop both upstream and downstream capabilities like fabrication and packaging,” he added.

Further, according to CM Sarma, discussions covered plans to expand the state’s railway network, including a proposed rail line conencting Lanka to Umrangso, as well as expediting the India-Bhutan rail connectivity project.

He said, “On the Rail sector, we spoke on expanding the railway network in Assam- including a new line from Lanka to Umrangso and expediting the India-Bhutan rail project. Will share more updates on these efforts in the coming days.” NE News
