Seoul Semiconductor steps up India plans as states vie for chip investments
South Korean LED and optical semiconductor major Seoul Semiconductor is stepping up plans to establish a stronger presence in India, as key electronics and semiconductor hubs compete to attract fresh investments. The company has previously explored an R&D facility and potential manufacturing operations in north India and is now understood to be evaluating multiple locations across leading electronics clusters, according to industry sources. These discussions align with India’s broader strategy under the Semicon India and India Semiconductor Mission programmes, which offer incentives to global chipmakers and display manufacturers.
People tracking the developments say states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat are actively pitching sites and tailored incentive packages to Korean and other foreign semiconductor firms, positioning themselves as gateways for both domestic and export‑oriented production. Policy makers see investments by companies like Seoul Semiconductor as critical to deepening the local component ecosystem for telecom gear, consumer electronics, automotive lighting and display solutions.
For India’s telecom and ICT sectors, a stronger on‑ground presence of Korean semiconductor and display players could support more resilient supply chains for 5G radios, FTTH equipment, set‑top boxes and data centre infrastructure. As operators ramp up 5G roll‑outs, fibre‑to‑the‑home expansion and hyperscale data centre projects, demand for high‑efficiency LEDs, optics and power devices is expected to grow sharply, making local manufacturing increasingly attractive. Industry analysts note that Seoul Semiconductor’s India plans also reflect a wider push by Korean firms to diversify manufacturing footprints beyond China while tapping India’s large and fast‑growing electronics market.
