Fuel and power risks loom over India’s telecom networks as DoT steps in

The Department of Telecommunications has intervened to address growing concerns over diesel supply disruptions that industry players warn could compromise the operational continuity of telecom networks across the country, as operators flag a broader set of fuel and power-related risks that they say remain inadequately addressed.

The move comes as network operators have raised alarms about the reliability of diesel supply chains critical to powering backup generators at tower sites and data facilities. In a sector where uptime is both a regulatory obligation and a commercial imperative, any sustained interruption in fuel availability carries the risk of cascading service failures, particularly in regions where grid power remains unreliable or intermittent.

Industry bodies have, however, signalled that diesel supply is only one dimension of a wider challenge. Operators have pointed to structural vulnerabilities in how telecom infrastructure is powered, encompassing grid instability, the high cost and logistical complexity of maintaining adequate fuel reserves at dispersed tower locations, and the still-nascent transition to renewable energy alternatives at scale. Taken together, these factors, the industry argues, represent a systemic risk to network resilience that requires a more comprehensive policy response than any single intervention can provide.

The DoT’s engagement is seen as an acknowledgment that energy security for telecom infrastructure is no longer a back-office concern but a front-line policy issue, particularly as India’s networks carry an ever-growing volume of critical economic and social traffic. Whether the department’s involvement translates into durable solutions — or remains a reactive measure to an immediate pressure — will be watched closely by an industry that has long argued for more proactive government partnership on infrastructure resilience.
