AWS plans $430 million data centre in Navi Mumbai

Amazon Web Services has announced plans to build a $430 million data centre in Navi Mumbai, the satellite city that has emerged as one of India’s most active hyperscale infrastructure corridors, adding another significant brick to what is shaping up to be a $12.7 billion AWS investment programme in India through 2030.

The Navi Mumbai location is no surprise to industry watchers. The city, situated across the harbour from Mumbai, has attracted sustained attention from global cloud and colocation providers drawn by its proximity to India’s financial capital, available land at scale, and improving power infrastructure. Demand in the broader Mumbai metro area is projected to reach 800 megawatts in the coming years, making it one of the most consequential data centre markets in Asia.

The $430 million facility forms part of a much larger strategic commitment. AWS has separately signalled plans for expansion in Hyderabad, India’s other major technology hub, as part of an effort to build out multi-region redundancy and serve the growing volume of enterprise, government, and financial services workloads that require in-country data residency.

The announcement comes as India’s overall data centre capacity is on track to reach two gigawatts by 2026, backed by an estimated $30 billion in investment across providers, according to recent industry analysis. AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud are all competing aggressively for position in a market where cloud penetration remains relatively early-stage but is accelerating rapidly across sectors.
