Wistron and Karnataka sign MoU for laptop manufacturing plant

Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Wistron (ICT Service Management Solutions) and the Karnataka government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on January 31 to establish a laptop manufacturing plant that may boost job generation in the state.

MB Patil, Karnataka minister of large and medium industries, said that under the MoU, the Taiwan-based company would invest Rs 1,500 crore and will likely create around 3,000 job opportunities.

The minister said that the company has requested 32 acres of land for the proposed project, and the government is considering providing the required land in the Bengaluru region.

“The globally leading company, known for providing technology services and products, plans to commence work related to setting up the plant in July 2024 and aims to start manufacturing laptops by January 2026,” said Patil.

He also claimed that this would be the first unit of its kind to manufacture laptops in Karnataka.

“The unit, aligned with Industry 4.0 standards and featuring a fully automated facility, will produce laptops for all brands, with over 50% of the laptops manufactured here intended for export. Additionally, the plant will produce IoT components and EV-related parts,” he added.

Patil highlighted that the move is not just about electronic production; it’s about fostering innovation, creating job opportunities, and positioning Karnataka as a leader in the electronics manufacturing industry, he said. Moneycontrol
