Smartphone Displays With Higher Refresh Rates To Become Mainstream

Smartphone displays with higher refresh rates are likely to become a mainstream technology in the handset industry in 2020, according to industry sources.

Samsung Display pioneered the trend by adopting handset panels with a refresh rate of 120Hz for its newly released Galaxy S20 lineup, which includes S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra. The Galaxy S20 series products use Samsung Display’s Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays, which also reduce blue light by 18% compared to its previous generation.

Xiaomi recently released Mi 10 lineup, including Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro, which feature AMOLED displays with a refresh rate of 90HZ. The Mi 10 series uses AMOLED displays from Samsung Display and China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT).

China-based brand Nubia, a handset arm of ZTE, is set to launch its 5G gaming phone, dubbed Red Magic 5, soon with the phone’s display to feature a 144Hz refresh rate.

Nubia will release the 5G Red Magic at a local event instead of a planned launch at the canceled MWC 2020, noted the sources.

Smartphones featuring displays with higher refresh rates will also mean that there will be upgrades for CPUs for gaming, streaming and browsing, said the sources.-Digi Times
