Nokia warns — China set to exclude western telecom vendors

Nokia’s Mobile Networks president Tommi Uitto has stated that China is poised to ban western vendors, including Nokia and Ericsson, from its telecom equipment sector due to national security concerns. Uitto confirmed that Chinese authorities verbally communicated the decision to block both companies from participating in China’s mobile network market. Currently, Nokia’s and Ericsson’s share in China’s mobile infrastructure is very limited, standing at just about 3 percent of the overall market. The move would mirror the way Chinese vendors, especially Huawei and ZTE, have faced restrictions or bans in Western markets over similar security issues.

Uitto described this action as a form of “reciprocity” and called for the European Union to respond with equally strong measures against Chinese suppliers, particularly in countries where Chinese telecom equipment is still permitted. The anticipated ban underscores escalating geopolitical tensions and tit-for-tat protectionist policies shaping the global telecom industry. Both Nokia and Ericsson have already shifted much of their sourcing and manufacturing out of China to reduce exposure amid rising trade and security risks. If the ban is enforced, it will accelerate ongoing supply chain diversification and could shift industry dynamics in favor of established local players within China.

Uitto emphasized that Nokia’s role is not political, but the company must respond to the realities of international policy and market structures. The European Commission is expected to push harder on restricting Chinese supplier access if this ban goes forward, further fragmenting the telecom market along geopolitical faultlines.
