Nokia demonstrates potential of 6G sensing networks at IMC 2023

The India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023, recognized as Asia’s premier telecom, media, and technology forum, is currently underway in New Delhi. During this event, Nokia presented an intriguing application of 6G technology known as the “network as a sensor” or “6G sensing network” concept. This concept goes beyond traditional communication functions and allows the network itself to become a sensor with a wide range of applications.

At the IMC, Nokia demonstrated how the radio waves emitted by a network device can be used to detect human movement. Using the example of a virtual piano, the network can detect an individual’s proximity and play different notes as they pass through the instrument. The network captures specific details such as obstacle distance, position, and movement velocity. Leveraging the low latency characteristic of 6G, Nokia’s proprietary algorithm translates these parameters into musical notes, essentially turning movements into music.

The significance of this use case extends beyond musical applications. With the sensing capability of the network, there is potential to eliminate the need for additional sensors in various scenarios, such as wearable devices or sensors in traffic management and railway line protection. Existing radio infrastructure can function as sensors, making informed decisions and even triggering actions, such as applying brakes in railway systems.

Nokia’s demonstration at the India Mobile Congress highlights the immense possibilities that 6G technology can bring to various industries. By leveraging the network as a sensor, Nokia showcases the potential for innovative applications that can revolutionize how we interact with technology and enhance our daily lives.

As the India Mobile Congress continues, attendees will have the opportunity to explore other cutting-edge innovations and advancements in the telecom, media, and technology sectors. The IMC serves as a platform for major tech companies to showcase their latest offerings and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the industry. ISP
