NextWave to launch private network services in New York

US operator NextWave has launched a 2.5 GHz private network service in the New York City metro area to compete with a growing number of similar offerings from major mobile operators.

NextWave is using existing licenses for the service, which is a precursor to launching in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Philadelphia by early 2023. The operator owns 50MHz of licensed spectrum in those markets.

The New York metro service is initially available in Manhattan and surrounding neighborhoods, along with some major transportation and industrial areas.

NextWave aims to cover the entire New York metro area of about 15 million people by early 2023.

The company claims that the service is a first for a WAN intended for private network applications.

NextWave has covered a network of 5G micro-cells with 4G and 5G WAN, citing security and performance advantages.

Frank Caso, President and CEO of NextWave, highlighted the fact that 2.5GHz is gaining traction as an advantage in terms of device availability.

NextWave was disbanded from Qualcomm in 1995, and the US government subsequently fought over ownership of the PCS spectrum that had been won while it was undergoing bankruptcy protection.

After a positive ruling, it sold most of its spectrum holdings to Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile US. Chof360
