Nelco to launch in-flight connectivity soon

Nelco, a Tata group company, is working on new tariff plans to provide IFC services or In-Flight Connectivity services to air passengers. A new tariff plan is expected to be launched soon, which will allow the flyers to use social media sites while travelling by air.

Nelco Director, PJ Nath, told a leading media house, “Tariff plans are still a work in progress, and once the domestic market opens up for IFC, there will be different models which will come up… some will be built into the price of a ticket, while some will be charged separately.”

Currently, Nelco is the only company that is planning to provide IFC services to its users. The airline sector was badly hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic but industry experts are optimistic about the revival amidst easing daily cases and increasing vaccinations.

In-Flight and Maritime Communications or IFMC permit was signed by Nelco in 2019. It allows both voice and data services but it is up to the airlines to ultimately decide what to offer and what not.

The company is working with Japan’s Panasonic Avionics to provide IFC services in the country. Globally, Panasonic handles around 30 per cent of the IFC market. Some of its biggest clients include British Airways and the Emirates. Business World
