Modi calls to patent chips, dominate global semiconductors

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indian firms to secure global chip patents and establish a strong presence in the global semiconductor value chain, emphasizing the need for indigenous intellectual property at the fourth Semicon India conference in New Delhi. This comes as India prepares to unveil an expanded outlay for the Semiconductor Mission and a revamped design-linked incentive scheme aimed at supporting domestic chip design and IP creation.

PM Modi highlighted the country’s transition from being just a consumer to an emerging global hub for chip design, assembly, and manufacturing, with the government’s policy focus now pivoting towards deeper R&D, patent generation, and strategic industry partnerships. The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has already approved ten major semiconductor projects, while the national chip market is projected to touch $100–110 billion by 2030.

Encouraging efforts to build Indian intellectual property assets in the semiconductor sector, Modi called for an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” approach, signaling that patenting chips and advanced semiconductor technologies will be key to India’s ambition of global leadership in this critical industry.
