How generative AI impacts IT jobs

According to recent research, the use cases of generative artificial intelligence may have an influence on the scope of work for around one percent of India’s 5.4 million IT workforce, which is split among people working in sales and support, and may provide extra income potential of two to three billion dollars for the sector.

There are around 300,000 employees working in sales and support operations inside India’s $245 billion dollar technology services business at the moment. According to research that was conducted by IT market intelligence company UnearthInsight and shared exclusively with ET, this will have an influence on the work of around 50,000 to 60,000 people over the next three to five years.

It is not necessary that this will result in job losses; rather, the influence on these positions will be such that they may interact more with AI-powered technologies and colleagues, according to the report.

“It is not like the employees will be replaced,” said Gaurav Vasu, founder and CEO of UnearthInsight. “It is not like that at all.” “According to Google and OpenAI, who are responsible for developing the generative AI language models Bard and ChatGPT, it will result in the creation of extra employment opportunities. There will be an increase in demand for new positions such as system consultants and prompt engineers.

It is comparable to how many thought “jobs will vanish” when computers came out in the 1980s; yet, according to Vasu, this phenomenon will simply result in the development of fresh ones.

“At first glance, these solutions will appear to be cost-optimization initiatives,” he added. “However, over the longer term, Indian IT services firms will generate revenues by merging business process outsourcing (BPO) services with private generative AI technology in order to transform enabling functions for clients.”

According to the findings of research conducted by UnearthInsight, the dependency on full-time equivalent workers (also known as FTEs) will decrease in the sales, support, and enabling divisions moving ahead, but at the same time both the quality of jobs and productivity will increase.

According to the paper, there is a possibility that roles like pre-sales, bid management, sales enablement, and solution architect might be influenced by AI copilots handling lead generation or AI-curated sales material.

In a similar vein, several of the recruitment and resource management operations, such as external recruiting, internal fulfilment, and onboarding, might be revolutionised by AI-generated profile screening and candidate referral, as well as individualised onboarding.

On-demand reporting, AI-fueled scenarios and prediction, auto warnings, and regulatory reports may have an influence on certain positions inside the internal finance department. These responsibilities include financial analysis, modeling, and forecasting.

According to the research, generative AI solutions will be made available to customers together with SAP or Oracle products since the majority of sales, human resource, or account data is located on these companies’ respective platforms. Techgig
