BSNL, MTNL merger on the cards

DoT is in the final stages of preparing a roadmap for the merger of MTNL with BSNL. This proposal will undergo a thorough review by the inter-ministerial group of secretaries, followed by potential approval.

One of the options under consideration by the inter-ministerial secretaries is the integration of MTNL’s operations entirely within the BSNL framework, particularly considering MTNL’s financial challenges.

Currently, BSNL manages the mobile networks of MTNL in Delhi and Mumbai.

The group, led by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, comprises representatives from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY), Information and Broadcasting (I&B), Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (Dipam), and the Department of Commerce.
