Bharat Bhatia to lead global ITU standards group on 5G

International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working party dealing with 5G standardization activities globally has selected Mr. Bharat Bhatia, President of the ITU-APT Foundation of India (IAFI) to be the Chairman of the working group on 5G for Industrial and Enterprise applications.

In the meeting of ITU WP5D, that concluded last week, Bhatia was unanimously approved to be the Chairman of the new working group on Specific Applications .

In addition to Industries and enterprises, the working group under Bhatia’s leadership will also develop ITU Standards for other specific applications such as e-health, automated vehicles, Public safety and disaster relief, etc.

Speaking on his new role in the ITU-R WP5D, Bhatia said that “5G deployments in industrial and Enterprise applications is taking off around the world and is expected to lead to higher efficiency , lower cost of manufacture and reduced energy consumption”.

Bhatia also added that the “intelligent transformation” of industries and Enterprises could lead to over 40 per cent improvement in efficiency while substantially reducing the defect rate and facilitate lower carbon emissions.

It may be recalled that the same ITU-R WP5D had earlier approved the Indian TSDSI standard for 5G as one of the approved interfaces for 5G.

ITU-APT Foundation of India (ITU-APT) is a non-profit, non-political, non-partisan Industry foundation registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1960. ITU-APT is working for last 18 years with the prime objective of encouraging involvement of professionals, corporate, public/private sector industries, R&D organizations, academic institutions, and such other agencies engaged in development of Indian Telecom sector in the activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT).

The Foundation has been recognized as an International/Regional Telecommunications Organization by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). ITU-APT is also having close working relations with similar organizations in many other countries including, Japan, Indonesia and USA.

Our members include many stalwarts of the telecom sector including many previous secretaries, members, advisors and DDGs of the DOT and Telecom Commission.
