AT&T launches 5G in Mexico  

Operator AT&T Mexico has announced the start of deployment of its 5G network in the country. It also says it has plans to connect the first 50 mobile devices to the network, in order, it suggests, to test the browsing experience.

The aim, the company says, is to deploy 5G in the main markets of the country, starting with the major cities, over the next three years.

Further supporting the development of a 5G ecosystem, AT&T Mexico has also inaugurated what it calls the 5G Innovation Laboratory, a space designed to test and validate with collaborators, industry and customers different experiences that impact Mexico and other emerging markets. The aim is also to boost the country’s developer and entrepreneur ecosystem to enable different use cases.

AT&T Mexico says it will work with industry, government, universities, start-ups and large corporations, on developing prototypes – presumably devices and concepts, although this isn’t clear– that use 5G technology.

It says it will also accelerate different projects in alliance with incubators and investment funds, to develop technological solutions that may benefit the population, through tests on the 5G network.

As well as the 5G Innovation Laboratory, there will be hackathons involving representatives of academia and industry and eNovatives, a programme, with cash prizes, to encourage women to become involved in technology.
