Jean Bolot appointed as Director of Research at Orange Innovation
Orange Innovation’s mission is to “Prepare for the future, build the present”. The entity which brings together activities around the creation of strategic innovations, research and the implementation of technical and data policies for Orange, has a new Director of Research.
Research missions consist of exploring technological breakthroughs, new uses and innovative economic models to shed light on the future, build strategic assets (skills, intellectual property, etc.) and fuel the group’s innovation.
As Director of Research, Jean Bolot will continue the work already started and initiate new ones to lay the foundations for a future where technology is at the service of people. Through Research, Orange aims to improve everyone’s daily life and respond to major societal challenges through innovative and responsible uses of new digital technologies.
To invent this future, the 720 Orange researchers are working as part of open research with other players from around the world. They capture trends, invent and improve technologies for the networks and services of the future and place technological bricks and expertise at the service of innovation for the Group and the ecosystem.
Jean has a strong experience in research and technologies (networks, audio / video applications, artificial intelligence and deep learning…). He is also very involved in the societal and environmental challenges of digital technology. Jean will be able to bring together the Group’s research capacities to nurture responsible innovation at the service of people, inform the Group’s long-term strategic choices and influence the global digital ecosystem.
Before joining Orange, Jean headed the artificial intelligence laboratory of InterDigital, a research and development company specializing in the field of mobile technologies, located in the heart of Palo Alto. He also created and led Technicolor’s Silicon Valley Research Lab, which focused on using artificial intelligence for Hollywood to reinvent recommender systems and reduce production costs. Jean also ran Sprint’s research lab where he pioneered cell phone data on a large scale. Jean began his career in academic research at INRIA, then at the University of Berkeley, and participated in the development of the start-up Ensim.
