ZTE Corp Ready For 5G Trials In India

Chinese telecom major ZTE is ready with infrastructure and applications to conduct 5G trials in India, and is awaiting spectrum allocation to operators to conduct the tests.

The country is yet to take a call on the technology for 5G rollout, while fixing of frequencies and spectrum allocations are further away. “In India, we are seeking approvals from the government on conducting 5G trials and we are in talks with all the operators — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL),” Bhakti Sagar Khandelwal, Sales Director and BU Head, ZTE Telecom India, told BusinessLine.

The company is yet to initiate talks with Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJio).

“We understand that the government will allocate spectrum to these operators for conducting 5G trials. Once the allocation is done, we will participate with them for the trials. As and when the approvals (regulatory approvals for trials) come in, we will be ready from the infrastructure and the applications point of view, as well as with the back-end,” he added.

In the wake of security concerns raised by various countries, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is believed to be examining all security-related issues before permitting Chinese gear manufacturers to take part in 5G trials.

However, it is still not clear which technology Indian companies will use for 5G rollout.

Like the US, it could be the Millimetre Wave (MmWave), or the sub-6 GHz spectrum, recommended by the Indian industry.

“It’s still not clear whether the operators would go for MmWave; sub-6 GHz; band N78; 2.6 GHz, which is used for 4G; or the sub-1 GHz,” Khandelwal said, adding, ZTE’s technology is also available for many of these frequencies.―The Hindu Business Line
