Xilinx Grows Networking Portfolio With Solarflare Acquisition

Xilinx and Solarflare have been working together for some time and in June 2018, Xilinx made a strategic investment in Solarflare of an undisclosed amount. Solarflare was founded in 2001 and has steadily expanded its product portfolio over the years.

Solarflare’s product portfolio is comprised of multiple offering including app acceleration, server security, network capture and network adapters. Solarflare’s network adapters is the company’s largest product area with ultra-low latency network interface card (NIC) technologies.

“Solarflare has been a pioneer in key areas such as high-speed Ethernet, application acceleration, and NVMe-over-fabrics, which are the critical components needed to build the next generation of SmartNICs for cloud and enterprise technologies,” Salil Raje, executive vice president and general manager, Data Center Group, Xilinx, wrote in a statement. “Acquiring Solarflare brings Xilinx both market-leading technology and exceptional engineering talent with expertise in networking hardware, software, firmware and drivers.”

The acquisition of Solarflare was announced the same day Xilinx reported its fourth quarter and full fiscal 2019 financial results.

“We far surpassed our original revenue goal by delivering over $3 billion of revenue for the first time in our history,” Victor Peng, CEO of Xilinx said during his company’s earnings call. “This was 24% growth over fiscal 2018.”

Xilinx has a large portfolio of products and applications, though it is perhaps best known for its silicon innovations including System-On-Chip (SoC) and Field Gate Programmable Arrays (FPGAs) which are widely used in the networking market.

“We are strengthening our data center first strategy with today’s announcement of our intention to acquire Solarflare, a provider of high-performance, low latency networking solutions for multiple applications, including financial,” Peng said. “Solarflare’s software and networking expertise is an excellent complement to our silicon, IP and development tools leadership.”―Enterprise Networking Planet
