Xiaomi Responds To Oppo’s Under The Screen Front Camera Tech In Smartphones

It looks like Xiaomi is not far behind when it comes to showcasing the latest smartphone technology in terms of cameras. Hours after Oppo unveiled its under-the-screen front camera tech, Xiaomi also showcased the same camera tech in a video on Twitter.

Like what is seen in the video by Oppo, the Xiaomi prototype smartphone is also seen sporting a similar front camera UI. Once the front camera is activated, you see a black strip on top of the screen, where the camera setup resides. The video was showcased by Xiaomi director of product management, Donovan Sung on Twitter.

“Another video from #Xiaomi President Bin Lin, showing off a very exciting phone prototype… Here’s our #Mi9 with under-display camera, full-screen display and great selfie experience. No holes, no pop-ups, no notch… What does everyone think?,” tweeted Donovan.

The prototype is said to be that of the Xiaomi Mi 9. Like in the case with Oppo, there is no word as to when the feature will be reaching to end users and when exactly. We expect that this could probably arrive by next year. In future, it may trickle down to other affordable smartphones as well.

For now, Xiaomi’s latest smartphone, the Redmi Note 7 Pro comes with dual 48MP + 5MP AI dual rear camera setup with f/1.79 aperture. At the front, there is a 13MP shooter. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7S also has the same camera setup.

Oppo, Huawei and Google are the ones who seem to be leading the smartphone camera race for now. While Oppo has introduced 10x hybrid zoom for smartphone cameras, Huawei launched its P30 Pro with 30x ‘optical’ zoom. Google Pixel smartphones are still ahead in terms of delivering quality and portrait shots using just one lens at the back.―Gadgets Now
