Xiaomi Redmi Y2: MIUI 10 Features

Xiaomi has on September 11 officially announced the release of the Global Stable version of the MIUI 10 ROM for the Xiaomi Redmi Y2. The announcement was made by the official Mi Announcements team on the Mi discussions forum. Along with the good news, the Mi team also shared the full changelog of the new MIUI 10 Global Stable ROM.

It includes several new features for the Redmi Y2, such as artificial intelligence-based portrait mode for the single sensor front camera for a perfect bokeh effect, full-screen gesture navigation sans buttons, just as we see in the new Android 9 Pie and the Apple iPhone X, a revised user interface that gives content more space on the screen, ambient sounds based on natural phenomena such as drizzle, fire or beach waves, and improvements for several system apps such as Notes and Clock.

The Redmi Y2, as mentioned above, is a budget smartphone that offers great bang for the buck. The pricing starts at Rs 9,999, and yet the phone offers such advanced features as artificial intelligence and superpixels. The Redmi Y2 ships with a 5.99-inch HD+ display with thin bezels and 18:9 aspect ratio. With the new update, the phone features full-screen gesture navigation, where you have just one button for all navigation purposes, such as opening ‘recents’ tab or going back to the home screen. This button is barely visible at the bottom of the screen, leaving the full screen for content.

The Redmi Y2 has a strong 16MP front camera with 4500K soft light for natural and clear selfies. With the update, the selfie camera can take portrait shots thanks to AI, and blur out the background as and when you like. With AI, you also get several beautification features, such as recognition of gender and age, and beautification of facial features accordingly. Speaking of recognizing facial features, the front camera on the Redmi Y2 offers Face Unlock too. The rear dual camera has a 16MP primary sensor and a 5MP depth sensor, and uses large 1.25-micrometre pixels for low light photography. The rear camera also uses AI for bokeh effect, and gets electronic image stabilization for HD video recording.

The Redmi Y2 is powered by a 3080mAh battery and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor, which comes paired to either a 3GB RAM or a 4GB RAM. The smaller RAM model gets 32GB of internal storage and the 4GB RAM model gets 64GB of storage, but you can stretch the storage anyway to 256GB via a dedicated microSD card slot, while using two 4G SIM cards. The phone weighs 170 grams and measures 8.1 mm in thickness.
