Won’t Miss 5G Bus: Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha

Aiming potshots at the previous UPA Government, Minister of Communications (independent charge) Manoj Sinha said here on Monday that India missed the 3G and 4G buses, but assured that the country will not miss the 5G bus.

Speaking at the second edition of News18’s Tech and Auto awards, the senior BJP leader reassured stakeholders and said, “While the previous 3G and 4G buses may have been missed, India will surely ride on the 5G bus.”

Cautioning the challenges faced, Sinha said the evolving workable spectrum allocation rules and a network infrastructure road map are major challenges along the way.

“Government is deliberating on recommendations of a high-level 5G forum to ring in 5G services, but (related) data privacy issues, spectrum allocation and 5G infrastructure sharing rules are challenges we have to address,” Sinha added.

India, he said, “cannot afford to miss the 5G bus” and the government will “shortly take a call” on suggestions of the high-level forum to rapidly deploy 5G.

Sinha also encouraged industry players to invest, especially those in the infrastructure space. He added that Trai had told Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that it would give recommendations whenever needed, and that there would be no bottlenecks.

Sinha said the “economic impact of 5G alone is expected to be over USD 1 trillion by 2035”, adding that the consequent multiplier effect would be much stronger and play a transformational role in the product (development) level.

5G technology, he said, would enable “smart manufacturing”, and to be a part of a radically transformed global manufacturing supply chain. – News18
