WhatsApp Turns 10 Years Old

What is the app that crosses your mind when somebody asks you to share last night’s party pictures or when you wish to text your friend sitting in another corner of the world? Well, if you say WhatsApp, then you are among 1.5 million people who totally rely on this simple yet entertaining messaging app. For most of us, WhatsApp is the one-stop solution for everything and anything. From texting to sharing to building businesses, this app has always managed to keep us hooked in all these years.

Adding another feather to its cap, WhatsApp recently achieved a milestone by successfully completing 10 years. The Facebook-owned messaging app on Monday via blog post celebrated its 10th anniversary by looking back at its decade long journey. Here let’s take a quick look at what made WhatsApp one of the most loved app in the world.

2009: WhatsApp in 2009 was launched for iPhone and Android users, it initially began as a messaging app and then turned into a photo and video sharing app by the end of the year.

2010: This year, WhatsApp had introduced Location sharing feature on its app which enabled thousands of users to share their current location with their friends and family to let them know they are safe.

2013: Well, this was the year when we started to make WhatsApp groups for almost everything be it a class project or that impending Goa trip, WhatsApp Group chat helped us every time.

2014: In April 2014, WhatsApp achieved its first milestone by raking in 500 million users. This was the year when WhatsApp joined Facebook. In 2014, it also introduced the ‘Read receipts’ or Blue ticks feature on its app which became one of the most talked about feature of the year.

2015: In January 2015, the Facebook-owned messaging app expanded its horizon by rolling out WhatsApp Web for desktop users.

2016: In 2016, WhatsApp was on a roll! It kick-started its year by raking in 1 billion users every month and introducing the end-to-end encryption for a safer messaging experience. Then later in May, it launched its desktop app further making it easier for desktop users and at the end of the year, it revealed its video calling feature.

2017: From 1 million users every month to 1 billion every day, WhatsApp in no time achieved its another milestone. This year, it had introduced WhatsApp status, making the app more entertaining for its users.

2018: With each passing year, WhatsApp thrived to become better and bigger. In January 2018, WhatsApp built a strong 1.5 billion user family and to cater to the demands of its massive audience, it introduced WhatsApp Business app, WhatsApp Group calling and WhatsApp stickers. ―Times Now
