Whatsapp Backup Won’t Be Counted Against Google Drive Storage Limit, Here’s What It Means For You

WhatsApp users no longer have to worry about exhausting their Google Drive storage limit whenever they back up their chat now. Google and WhatsApp have together, under a new agreement, have announced to no longer count WhatsApp backups against Google Drive storage limit.

In simple words, it means that WhatsApp users can now back up their data without having o worry about their Google Drive quota. For example- say you are on Google Drive’s paid storage plan that offers 100 GB of data storage limit. You can now backup all your photos and videos on WhatsApp without reducing the 100GB quota on your Google Drive.

This is a good news for many especially those who love taking photos or are receiving a lot of photos every day on chat. Until now your data were automatically saved on Google Drive reducing the storage limit. This will no longer be the scene anymore. Starting November 12, 2018, WhatsApp backups will free and unlimited for all and forever.

Furthermore, WhatsApp backups that have not been updated in more than one year will be automatically removed from Google Drive storage. WhatsApp recommends you to manually backup your WhatsApp data before November 12, 2018, to avoid the loss of any backups.

WhatsApp allows you to backup your chats and media to Google Drive so that your chats and media are transferable if you change your phone or buy a new one.

To create a WhatsApp backup on Google Drive, you should have a Google Drive activated on your phone, Google Play services installed on your phone and have enough free space enough free space on your phone to create the backup.

To create a Google Drive backup, open WhatsApp. Now tap on Menu icon > Settings > Chats > Chat backup> tap on Back up to Google Drive and select a backup frequency other than Never. Now, select a Google account that you will back up your chat history to. Now simply follow the instructions to backup your data.
You can also manually back up your chats to Google Drive by tapping on Menu > Settings > Chats > Chat backup. Tap BACK UP to begin your Google Drive backup.

WhatsApp chats are fully encrypted but media and messages that you back up on Google Drive are not protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption. – India Today
