Virgin Media Business Unveils SD-WAN Service

Virgin Media Business has gotten onto the SD-WAN scoreboard with Wednesday’s news that it has launched SD-WAN with Versa Networks as its vendor.

Prior to the launch, Virgin Media Business said earlier this year it had picked SD-WAN-as-a-service vendor Versa Networks. Now that the integration is completed, Virgin Media Business will be competing against SD-WAN services from Colt Technology Services and BT, among others. BT first launched its SD-WAN service last year and rolled it out across its global footprint in June. Colt first launched its Versa-based SD-WAN two years ago.

Comcast Business, CenturyLink, and Verizon have also used Versa for their SD-WAN solutions.

“SD-WAN is an exciting growth opportunity because it provides a flexible platform to deliver new enterprise business services pushed out from the cloud,” said Scott Raynovich, founder and chief analyst, Futurium. “This is a particularly good option for cable operators who can provide network services to enterprises and are often unencumbered by legacy business network services. This is an excellent move by Virgin Media Business.”

As more applications and data are moved to the cloud, enterprises are clamoring to deploy software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications such as Office 365. Virgin Media Business’ SD-WAN enables access to SaaS-based offerings across multiple branch sites. It also helps large organizations access their cloud data and applications through the use of optimization tools.

Since it’s software-based, Virgin Media Business’ SD-WAN will also allow its business customers to scale and alter their networks as needed going forward. Virgin Media Business said the network was controlled via cloud-native software.

The service provides insight, analytics and visibility of network traffic so that key applications can be prioritized and traffic optimized to improve performance. The service is end-to-end IPSec encrypted and comes with a secure stateful firewall, which adds a layer of protection on top of customers’ existing security architecture while also providing the opportunity for them to consolidate security requirements.

“SD-WAN as a service transforms legacy infrastructure into an agile, responsive and secure digital platform with the cloud at its heart to help enterprises transform the way they work,” said Peter Kelly, managing director of Virgin Media Business, in a prepared statement. “By giving customers greater flexibility and control, SD-WAN helps businesses to evolve and tailor their networks quickly and easily.” – Fierce Telecom
