Users Freak Out Over Global WhatsApp Outage

Whatsapp went down around the globe early this morning with thousands of users reporting having issues with the app.

According to Downdetector which tracks outages for all kinds of digital services, WhatsApp crashed shortly after 5 am this morning, with complaints spiking during the following hour.

As is customary when one of the popular social media services experiences an outage, users flocked to Twitter to have their fears confirmed.

The issue appeared to be resolved about 90 minutes after complaints began rolling in.

Users in North America, South America and Europe reported having problems sending and receiving messages before the outage was fixed.

However, the issue did not appear to affect all users, with some ability to get onto both the app and desktop versions and use the service.

The Facebook-owned app is one of the world’s most popular mobile messaging platforms in the world with around 1.5 billion users logging in to the app each month.

The social media giant bought the messaging app for USD 30 billion in a stunning deal in 2014 but WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton has since encouraged people to delete Facebook.

WhatsApp has not publicly revealed the reason behind the outage. Although it has a public-facing Twitter feed, it has not posted since 2016 and often does not inform users of outages.―News.com.au
