US tariff actions on China underscore a pivotal moment for India

The India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), chairman Pankaj Mohindroo, has invited all stakeholders to engage with ICEA and together “harness the opportunity to shape a future where Indian electronics manufacturing is synonymous with innovation, quality, and sustainability.”

Given the US Trade Representative Katherine Tai’s proposal to modify the China tariffs under Section 301 and increase rates for imports of selected products from China to USA, on May 14, 2024, ICEA sees it as a strategic inflection point where India can capitalize on its strengths in technology, policy and partnerships.

In his post on Linkedin, Mohindroo said, “In 2018, the introduction of a 25% tariff on several Chinese products catalysed a shift in the global electronics supply chain. Recent escalations announced by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai are set to further this realignment, emphasizing the necessity for diverse and resilient manufacturing bases.

India, with its robust growth in electronics manufacturing, presents a significant opportunity in this evolving landscape. The establishment of the Indo-US Task Force for Electronics, spearheaded by India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) is a testament to our proactive stance, aiming to elevate India-US electronics trade from USD 12 billion in 2023 to an ambitious USD 100 billion within the next decade.

As global manufacturers seek alternatives to mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on a single market, India’s commitment to enhancing its manufacturing standards and aligning policies to support large-scale production becomes even more crucial.

Let us seize this moment to reinforce India’s position as a formidable player in the global electronics market, ensuring we are not just participants but leaders in this digital revolution.”

He encouraged all stakeholders to collaborate with the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) as they advance these initiatives. “Together, we can harness this opportunity to shape a future where Indian electronics manufacturing is synonymous with innovation, quality, and sustainability.”
