Turkcell, Ericsson Claim Turkey’s First Live 5G Test

Turkey’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, Turkcell, and Swedish vendor partner Ericsson have claimed the country’s first international 3GPP standards-compliant live 5G network connection test. The testing in Istanbul involved end-to-end 5G data transmission on the 3.5GHz frequency band using Turkcell’s 5G test network built with Ericsson’s radio access solution and cloud core system, Turkcell’s 5G-compatible SIM card and the Intel 5G Mobile Trial Platform device (in the absence of available commercial 5G terminals), connected with Turkcell’s existing commercial 4G network.

Last month Turkcell’s CEO Kaan Terzioglu told journalists that the operator was already ‘5G ready’, having previously tested 5G with millimeter wave spectrum and possessing the necessary technologies such as multi-carrier aggregation and massive MIMO antennas. The CEO also noted that in Turkey, Turkcell has two major technology partners, China’s Huawei and Ericsson, responsible for roughly 50% of the company’s infrastructure each, and 5G tests have been carried out with both main suppliers, in addition to 5G projects with South Korea’s Samsung.―Tele Geography
