TSDSI submits 6G vision to ITU-R M

ITU-R has initiated work on developing a recommendation on vision for IMT for 2030 and beyond. The draft document has been named as ITU-R M. [IMT.VISION 2030 and BEYOND]. This initiative is intended to address the “Motivation on driving factors for future technology trends towards 2030 and beyond” and will drive the direction of 6G technologies.

TSDSI is contributing towards the above IMT 2030 work. “TSDSI’s submission for 6G Vision focuses on 4 key technology pillars –

1. Technologies that aid development of a Ubiquitous Intelligent Mobile Connected Society:
It is anticipated that there will be a proliferation of network types such as Public, Private, Enterprise/ Industrial wireless networks, application specific specialized networks (broadcast networks as an example), IoT / sensor networks. These networks could be based on multiple different radio access technologies. Interoperability of these technologies will be critical to enable a ubiquitous intelligent, connected/ compute environment – where diverse networks, processes, applications, use cases and organizations are connected. This includes developing networks that can cater to very high bandwidth demanding applications such as holographic communications, digital twins and for applications/ devices that require extremely low bandwidth such as sensors.

2. Technologies to Bridge the Digital Divide:
Access and Affordability of technologies is a key parameter for bridging the Digital Divide across regions, gender and communities. Future technologies must leverage
a. Highly composable networks /architectures to address issues of cost and affordability
b. Spectrum Sharing / simultaneous spectrum use technologies which can lower the cost of initial spectrum purchase
c. Heterogeneous device types to bring down the cost of ownership without compromising on quality of high-end usage scenarios
d. Focus on Energy efficiency to be able to work in power starved scenarios / enhance lifespans of self-powered devices thus promoting affordability as well as sustainability.

3. Support technologies that can Personalize /localize services:
As home network capabilities, edge device / network capabilities are enhanced, there is an opportunity to personalize services like never before. It is important for personalization (focused on individuals, homes, apartments small / medium enterprises) services to be a key focus area. The opportunities to personalise services comes from the fact that storage capacity and thus the compute possibilities are now available across what can be termed as EDGE (the device, immediate access network points, the communication aggregation points, the transport (routers/switches) etc.). Home networks are getting sophisticated and providing opportunities for convergence like never before. In such distributed connectivity / compute environments, there are opportunities to standardize and deploy “Distributed, Edge-native Artificial Intelligence” that in turn can help personalize services without compromising privacy concerns.

4. Support technologies that can mimic real world data ownerships and hierarchies:
Personal data protection is becoming important and as nations, states, enterprises are focused on data protection and management, it is important that any future network / technology takes into account the intrinsic data hierarchies and management aspects. Data ownership granularity spans from personal data, enterprise or group data, organizational data, data considered as national assets (data that is not allowed to leave the geographic boundaries). Future communication / compute technologies will have to support such hierarchies. Provision for the data owners to access, modify, control data flows and dictate privacy norms and the nature of compute (algorithms) that can be run on such data will become important and technologies to support such demands will have to be accommodated.
